Video games linked to poor health

The results of a study of almost 1000 Victorian teenagers has shown that children who play video games are putting themselves at increased risk of poor health and wellbeing.

The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute conducted the survey to determine how different forms of electronic media impact on health outcomes. Those who reported a high use of video games were between 60 to 80 percent more likely to experience poor physical health and psychological distress than those who played no video games. The amount of time spent watching television did not appear to impact children’s health in a negative way and using the computer showed a slight improve in health outcomes.

Megan Mathers, lead researcher, said ‘Video game use could be seen as an isolating and violent activity for teenagers so reducing high usage and encouraging teenagers to be more socially and physically active would be beneficial’.

The study was published in Academic Pediatrics.

The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute aims to find innovative ways to treat and prevent conditions affecting children’s health. They have six themes under which they conduct research. To read about their latest research topics go to their website by following the link below.
