Using sunscreen is an essential part of sun safety in Australia. Some sunscreens however, contain tiny particles (called nanoparticles) which have the potential to be harmful rather than helpful.
Nanoparticles are very small particles, 1000 times smaller than the width of a human hair. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide nanoparticles are used in many sunscreens as UV blockers. There is concern that rather than offering sun protection, if these nanoparticles are absorbed into the skin, they could result in serious skin damage and other health harm.
Information about which brands use nanoparticles is not publicly available from the Therapeutic Goods Administration, however Friends of the Earth have produced a Safe Sunscreen Guide that provides information on which brands are free from nanoparticles so that you can make an informed choice when it comes to purchasing sunscreen. The Guide is based on information supplied by manufacturers in response to an annual survey that is conducted.
